Derryl is a master teacher. I came to him after not playing for 25 years, very little theory knowledge (learned to play by ear and buying a chord book as a teenager). He has taught me a lot of theory, but it has been practical and fun, not boring. He is a very perceptive teacher and knows what I need to improve even when I cannot articulate it. He is patient, which is a great attribute for a teacher. He knows my practice time is limited and he helps me make the most of that. In three short years with two hour long lessons a month, my playing is vastly improved. He stretches me, like all good teachers, and I am starting to be able to do some jazz and fusion. I ‘ve taken 2 lessons so far, but I purchased most of his Instructional DVDs and I’ve taken guitar lessons with 2 other guitar teachers throughout the years and Derryl is by far the most gifted teacher I’ve ever encountered. While he’s a monster player and a virtuoso he doesn’t put any pressure at all “technique-wise” and “theory-wise”. He’s also a talented teacher, i.e. that he can communicate different topics from beginner to advance levels, in such a way that you will understand the concept he’s trying to explain to you and you’ll be able to apply it to your own idiosyncratic way of playing almost right away. He also has a great wealth of information and materials that he can use to teach and give various exercises in many different topics. In short, I will definitely continue to take lessons with Derryl and I greatly recommend anyone, no matter what level you’re at or what styles of music you’re playing, because he will adapt his teaching to your goals and will help you to stay focused and maintain your motivation throughout this long journey that is learning to play the guitar!
